Andaz West Hollywood

History

The hotel opened as Gene Autry’s Continental Hotel in 1963. Sold to Hyatt Hotels Company in 1966, the Continental Hyatt House has been renamed. The proximity of the hotel to popular clubs like the Whisky a Go in the late 1960s and 1970s made it the preferred Los Angeles accommodation for touring rock groups, notably the English bands Led Zeppelin, The Who and the Rolling Stones. At the time it was often referred to as the Riot House, a play on the Hyatt House name.

In 1976 the hotel became the Sunset Hyatt. The hotel was transformed into the Hyatt West Hollywood in February 1997. The hotel was renovated in 2008 and reopened as the Andaz West Hollywood. 

Andaz West Hollywood is a 14-story hotel with 239 rooms including 20 suites and a restaurant called RH. The redesign was completed by Janson Goldstein LLP, an architectural and interior design company based in New York, and features a hand-painted 11-foot metal disk sculpture by renowned New York-based artist Jacob Hashimoto The balconies made famous by tales of rock stars who throw televisions from them are now glass-enclosed sunrooms overlooking Sunset Boulevard.

The Andaz West Hollywood is located on famous Sunset Boulevard, between Hollywood and Beverly Hills, essentially right. It’s not a particularly walkable place, but anyone would love the location because there are tons of great restaurants in the area, great views of the Hollywood Hills, and plenty of fun things to do within a 15-20 minute drive away. Weekend prices (which are peak times here, since lots of people spend weekends in West Hollywood) tend to hover about $250-300 per night, depending on whether you’re looking at a prepaid or flexible rate.

The Andaz has a pretty modern exterior, particularly when compared with many other charmingly past their prime buildings in the area. That makes sense, since it was renovated in 2009. It was previously the Riot House, which has a ton of entertainment history. The lobby of The Andaz is nice and spacious. There’s no “formal” front desk, as is the practice for Andaz properties, but there’s a desk where the “hosts” are located, and then they come to you with an iPad to check you in.
